GEOWHEEL

Imagine a box of chocolates with nine types of candies in it. Each type of candy represents one conception of geography teaching. When the candy box is full, you usually choose the candies (the conception) that you like best. There is always some type of candy that remains the least popular, i.e. you tend to shy away from a conception like that unwanted kind of candy. And it is the same with pupils. There are candies that some students prefer more than others. The aim is to offer pupils all kinds of candies, i.e. all conceptions of geography teaching. Only in this case will all the pupils come to their senses.

All the conceptions of geography teaching are somehow related. This means that individual conceptions do not lie next to each other separately and in isolation. The fact that the conceptions are not isolated also shows us that we are always talking about the prevailing (or dominant) conception of geography. All the other conceptions are also present in the teachers, but not in such strength or these conceptions are not realized.

Conceptions are also made up of groups (often called clusters). Now we will introduce you to groups with conceptions.

1st group

Teachers focused on the description and distribution of phenomena and locational knowledge

The group contains the following conceptions:

Placeist
Globalist
Map-lover

2nd group

Teachers focused on the application of the curriculum in everyday life and the general development of students

The group contains the following conceptions:

Facilitator
Synthesizer
Localist

3rd group

Teachers focused on scientific reasoning, explanations and making connections

The group contains the following conceptions:

Interactionist
Earthist
Environmentalist

Our advice:

  1. Know your dominant conceptions.
  2. Try to understand your dominant conception first before going to the next one.
  3. Each conception has its own specifics in teaching goals, assessment and approach to content and pupils.
  4. The fact that individual conceptions are in a group makes sense.
  5. The goal is not to be afraid to discover conceptions that are not preferred by you!
  6. It is easier to develop conceptions within the same group because they are related.
  7. If everything is clear, then HOORAY FOR DISCOVERY.

GEOWHEEL is the pinnacle of development, i.e. you can offer one topic from different geographical points of view. You can discuss one topic for several weeks and believe that you will surprise the students rather than bore them.

GEOWHEEL is waiting for you only after understanding the essence of all conceptions.

GEOWHEEL gives you the opportunity to experience the variability of one topic within different conceptions. If you can do this, you will become a complex geography teacher :-).
